Smartlead pricing, features and alternatives

Smartlead is worth buying when cold email is a volume channel for you and the bottleneck is sending infrastructure rather than copy. Smartlead pricing runs from $39 to $379 a month across four plans, none priced per seat, each with unlimited connected mailboxes. The mailboxes and domains you send from are billed separately, and for most teams that bill is larger than the software.

Pricing checked against Smartlead's pricing page.

The short answer

Buy Smartlead if you run cold email across many inboxes and domains and you already have a data source and a copywriting process. Pro at $94 a month, or $78.30 on annual billing, is where most sales teams start, because Base has no API, no webhooks and no CRM access. Deliverability tooling is the reason to pay: warmup, send rotation, spintax and A/B testing.

Skip it if you want a tool that researches accounts and writes the outreach for you, because this is closer to plumbing than to an autonomous agent and one 2026 review rated it well on infrastructure while saying it lacks an intelligence layer. Skip it too if your team needs fast, hands-on support, or if you send low volume from one or two inboxes.

Where Smartlead fits

Smartlead fits two shapes of team. The first is an agency running white-label cold email for clients, where inbox count, domain hygiene and client separation are the daily problems. The second is an in-house outbound team that treats cold email as a volume channel and already owns the two things Smartlead does not supply: a list and a message. It connects many sending inboxes, warms them up, rotates sends across them, and runs sequences at volume, which is a narrower job than the category label suggests.

That label is the main source of mis-purchase here. Smartlead gets listed with AI SDR tools, including in our own AI SDR software directory, but it is sending infrastructure with AI-assisted writing attached rather than an agent that prospects on your behalf. If your actual problem is that nobody has time to build lists and draft sequences, a tool like 11x or an agent product is the category you are shopping in, and Smartlead will feel like a well-built answer to a question you did not ask.

The pricing model tells you who it is designed for. Four plans, priced by stored contacts and monthly sends rather than by seat, each with unlimited connected mailboxes. A ten-rep team and a two-rep team on the same send volume pay the same, which is unusual in this category and is the structural reason agencies like it: your margin does not shrink as the team running the campaigns grows. It also means the counters, not the headcount, are what you have to forecast. Contacts stored and sends per month are separate meters and they fill at different speeds.

Deliverability is where the product earns its keep. Smartlead warms up connected inboxes and spreads sends across them, and reviewers consistently credit the warmup, rotation and testing features over everything else. One reviewer who pushed a large volume through it called it one of the most reliable cold email tools for scaling safely. The things to ask about are the failure cases rather than the happy path: how warmup is managed across domains, and what happens to live campaigns and scheduled sends when an inbox gets flagged or disconnected mid-sequence.

The usual head-to-head is Instantly, and the two are close enough that the comparison is worth running on your own domains rather than on a feature table. Some Reddit users say Smartlead offers more features at a similar price. Salesforge is the alternative for teams that want AI-written outreach on top of sending, and Apollo.io bundles contact data with sequencing if your real goal is fewer tools rather than better sending.

What Smartlead replaces cleanly: a pile of manually managed sending accounts, a warmup tool, a sequencing tool and the spreadsheet tracking which domain is burned. What it does not replace: your list building, your research, your copy, or the person who reads replies. Smartlead runs the sends, but your sales cadence decides timing and follow-up count, and nothing in the product will tell you that a four-step sequence to the wrong segment is the problem.

Smartlead pricing

Smartlead publishes everything, which makes it one of the few products in this category you can model before a sales call. Our September 2026 check of smartlead.ai/pricing and Smartlead's own pricing fact sheet found four plans, none priced per seat or per mailbox, with annual billing advertised at 17% off. The catch is not the plan table. It is that the mailboxes and domains you send from are a separate purchase, and at realistic volumes they cost more than the subscription.

Plans, counters and the add-ons beside them

Base
$39 per month, or $32.50 on annual billing. 2,000 stored contacts and 6,000 sends a month, unlimited mailboxes. No API, no webhooks and no CRM access, which rules it out for most sales teams.
Pro
$94 per month, or $78.30 annual. 30,000 contacts and 90,000 sends a month, with API and CRM access. This is where most sales teams start.
Unlimited Smart
$174 per month, or $144.50 annual. Unlimited contacts and 150,000 sends a month, with 50,000 verified prospect emails included.
Unlimited Prime
$379 per month, or $314.60 annual. 500,000 sends a month, 170,000 verified emails, three SmartServers and three client workspaces.
Enterprise
Custom quote, for volumes above Prime, per Smartlead's llms.txt file.
SmartSenders mailboxes
$4.50 per mailbox per month plus $13 per domain per year for fresh Google or Outlook mailboxes. Pre-warmed mailboxes are $9 per mailbox per month, and SMTP starts at $3.99.
Other add-ons
$29 to $599 a month. SmartDelivery inbox-placement testing at $49, $174 or $599; SmartServers dedicated IPs at $39 per server; agency client workspaces at $29 each from Pro up; verified prospect emails at $59 a month on Base and Pro; email verification credits from $32.

What ten reps cost all in

Here is the model, with the assumptions stated so you can change them. Ten reps, each adding 500 new prospects a month to a four-step sequence, is 5,000 prospects and 20,000 sends a month, sent from three mailboxes per rep: 30 mailboxes across 10 domains, about three per domain.

Pro covers that send volume comfortably at $78.30 x 12 = $939.60 a year on annual billing, or $94 x 12 = $1,128 billed monthly. The counter that bites is contacts, not sends. At 5,000 new contacts a month, Pro's 30,000 stored contacts fills in roughly six months unless somebody is deleting old leads, which is the usual reason teams move up to Unlimited Smart at $144.50 x 12 = $1,734 a year.

Now add the sending estate, which is the line most business cases miss. Bought through SmartSenders, 30 fresh mailboxes is 30 x $4.50 x 12 = $1,620 a year, plus 10 x $13 = $130 a year in domains. All in, that is Pro at $939.60 + $1,620 + $130 = $2,689.60 a year, or Unlimited Smart at $1,734 + $1,620 + $130 = $3,484 a year, before any data or deliverability add-on. The mailbox bill is larger than the software bill, and it scales with reps even though the subscription does not.

The add-on arithmetic also changes which plan you should buy. Verified prospect emails from the SmartProspect lead finder are a $59 a month add-on on Base and Pro and included on Smart and Prime, so Pro plus lead data is $939.60 + $708 = $1,647.60 a year, which is only $86.40 less than Unlimited Smart with the same data included and unlimited contact storage. If you need the lead finder at all, Pro stops being the rational choice. Put these numbers through our sales tool ROI calculator alongside meetings booked rather than emails sent, because a $3,484 all-in channel needs to be judged on pipeline rather than on volume.

Smartlead pricing is transparent and incomplete at the same time: every rate is published, and the published rates are roughly a third of what the channel costs. Budget the subscription, the mailboxes, the domains, the lead data and the placement testing as one line, which for ten reps with 30 mailboxes lands near $2,690 a year on Pro and $3,484 on Unlimited Smart. There is no long-term contract and the free trial needs no credit card, so the downside of testing is time rather than money. What Smartlead gives up

You give up the intelligence layer. Research, targeting and messaging stay with you or with another tool, and a 2026 review that rated Smartlead well on infrastructure made exactly that criticism. The practical consequence is that Smartlead will send a badly targeted sequence as reliably as a good one, at higher volume than a human team could manage, which is a faster way to burn a domain list than doing it by hand. Decide who owns list quality before you turn on rotation.

You give up fast support, by the account of a fair number of reviewers. Trustpilot users mention slow support and software lag, and the complaint is specific enough to plan around rather than dismiss. If your campaigns run around the clock, open a real ticket during the trial and time the response instead of asking the sales rep what the target is. Ask what typical response time is on your plan, in writing, and treat the answer as part of the price.

You give up a single bill. Mailboxes, domains, lead data on Base and Pro, inbox-placement testing and dedicated servers are each billed separately, and the add-on range runs from $29 to $599 a month. None of it is hidden, all of it is on the pricing page, and that is the point: the published plan price is an accurate number for the wrong thing. The team that gets surprised is the team that put $94 a month in the budget and bought 30 mailboxes in month two.

You give up API access and CRM integration on the cheapest plan. Base at $39 a month has no API, no webhooks and no CRM access, which makes it a tool for a solo operator rather than a sales team, and it is the reason the realistic entry price here is Pro at $94 rather than the headline $39. If your evaluation is anchored on the $39 figure, re-anchor it before you present a budget.

You give up contact storage headroom sooner than send headroom. Stored contacts and monthly sends are separate counters, and Pro's 30,000 contacts is the one that fills first at any serious prospecting volume. Nothing warns you in a demo, because a demo does not run for six months. Agree a deletion policy for old leads at the start, or price Unlimited Smart and stop thinking about it.

You give up the simplicity argument if you only need a little of this. Teams sending from one or two inboxes are paying for an inbox-rotation engine they will never load, and a simpler sequencing tool will do the job with less to configure. The feature set that makes Smartlead worth buying at 30 mailboxes is overhead at two.

How Smartlead compares

The decision here is not Smartlead against the field, it is how much of outbound you want a vendor to own. Smartlead and Instantly sit at the infrastructure end: you bring the list and the copy, they handle the sending. Salesforge sits one step up, adding AI-written outreach and selling its own mailboxes. AiSDR and 11x sit at the agent end, where the vendor picks the accounts and writes the messages, and the price reflects that. Every rate below comes from each product's own published pricing, checked in September 2026, not from a quote we were given. Read the last column twice, because all five break somewhere and the only question is whether each one breaks where your team works.

What to test in a Smartlead trial

The free trial needs no credit card and there is no long-term contract, so the only cost of a proper test is the two weeks it takes. Run it on a small, real domain set rather than on your main sending estate, and run Instantly beside it on the same domains, because inbox placement is the one metric that decides this and it cannot be read off a feature table.

  1. Stand up three fresh domains with three mailboxes each, warm them through Smartlead, and record how many days pass before an inbox is ready for full volume. That number sets your ramp plan and nobody will give it to you in a demo.
  2. Send the same sequence through Smartlead and through Instantly on matched domain sets for two weeks, then compare inbox placement rather than open rates. Spend the $49 SmartDelivery tier for the duration if you want placement measured rather than inferred.
  3. Disconnect or flag an inbox mid-campaign on purpose and watch what happens to the scheduled sends behind it. This is the failure mode that costs a domain, and it is cheapest to discover during a trial.
  4. Write one sequence with spintax and personalization variables, then read ten generated variants side by side and judge whether they are different enough to survive a spam filter. If they read as the same email, the feature is decorative.
  5. Count your real contact volume per month against the 30,000 stored contacts on Pro, and decide your deletion policy now. Six months of 5,000 new contacts a month is the moment this choice gets made for you.
  6. If you are an agency, create two client workspaces at $29 each and check reporting separation, billing structure and whether a client can be shown their own view without seeing anyone else's.
  7. Open a support ticket about something real during the trial and time the reply. Reviewers say support is slow; find out what slow means on your plan before campaigns depend on it.
  8. Add up the all-in annual figure for your own rep count, mailbox count and domain count, including the $59 lead-data add-on if you need it, and compare it against the quote from whichever agent product is also on the shortlist. The honest comparison is channel cost against pipeline, not subscription against subscription.

Smartlead questions buyers ask

What is Smartlead used for?
Running cold email at scale across many inboxes, with warmup, rotation, and sequencing.
How much does Smartlead cost?
Per Smartlead's pricing page: Base $39/month, Pro $94, Unlimited Smart $174, and Unlimited Prime $379, or $32.50, $78.30, $144.50, and $314.60 a month on annual billing. Mailboxes and domains cost extra: $4.50 per mailbox per month and $13 per domain per year through SmartSenders. A 10-rep team on Pro with 30 mailboxes runs about $2,690 a year all in.
Does Smartlead have a free plan or free trial?
There is no free plan. Smartlead offers a free trial on every plan with no credit card required, per its pricing page, and there are no long-term contracts. Use the trial to test warmup and inbox placement on a small domain set.
Smartlead vs Instantly: which is better?
Both handle cold email infrastructure. Some Reddit users say Smartlead offers more features at a similar price. Test both on your own domains.
Is Smartlead an AI SDR?
Not quite. It offers AI-assisted writing, but its strength is sending infrastructure rather than autonomous prospecting.
Is Smartlead AI legit?
Yes, it is an established cold email platform rather than a thin wrapper, and reviewers consistently credit its deliverability tooling: warmup, send rotation, spintax and A/B testing. The criticisms are about support speed and occasional software lag, not about whether the product works. Test warmup and inbox placement on your own domains during the free trial.
What are the reviews like for Smartlead?
Mixed, in a consistent pattern. Reviewers praise deliverability and value, and one who sent a large volume through it called it one of the most reliable cold email tools for scaling safely. Trustpilot users mention slow support and software lag, and a 2026 review said it lacks an intelligence layer above the sending infrastructure.
What is the best cold email platform?
There is no single answer, and the honest test is placement on your own domains. Smartlead and Instantly are the two most often compared for sending infrastructure, with Smartlead from $39 a month and Instantly from $37.60 a month on annual billing. Run both on matched domain sets for two weeks and compare inbox placement.
